Start with contact and access
Know how to contact your assistance provider and where the vehicle’s handbook and recovery information are kept. Keep a charged phone and an appropriate way to power it. A digital document is less useful if the phone battery is flat or the details require a connection.
Match the journey
Think about weather, passengers and the type of roads you use. Suitable clothing, drinking water and a torch may be more helpful than complicated equipment. Follow the vehicle handbook for any supplied emergency kit and know its limits before a journey.
Secure every item
Use storage that cannot move into the driver’s footwell or become loose in the cabin. Check that organisers do not interfere with seat operation or vehicle safety equipment. A boot full of accessories is not automatically a safer boot.
Keep roadside actions limited
Getting to safety and following your assistance provider’s instructions matters more than using every tool you own. Road type and location change the appropriate action. This guide does not tell you to carry out a repair beside traffic.
