Define the job
Write down the journeys, passengers, luggage and parking the car needs to handle. Set a whole-ownership budget, not just a purchase price. Include insurance, local licensing, maintenance, fuel and a reserve for uncertain work. An attractive listing is useful only if the car suits the job.
Ask for information early
Request the registration details, mileage, service evidence and an explanation of known faults. Ask whether the seller has the required documents and authority to sell. Keep the advert or your notes, and investigate inconsistencies before making arrangements.
Use the right records
UK government vehicle and MOT services can help with UK-registered vehicles. Isle of Man vehicles use local services and rules. A clean online result does not establish mechanical condition, ownership, finance status or a complete history; understand what each check actually covers.
Compare like with like
Use one sheet per candidate, separating facts from seller statements and your questions. A cheaper car with unclear history may not be the cheaper ownership choice. Put unresolved issues in a visible column rather than giving every candidate a misleading numerical score.
