Structure a viewing without pretending to be an inspector

A viewing is your chance to gather evidence and decide what to verify.

Prepare before meeting

Arrange a suitable time and location and check any requirements for a test drive, including permission and insurance. Take your questions, a way to make notes and the details already supplied. If the situation or paperwork feels wrong, you do not have to continue.

02

Match the identity

Check the vehicle details against the appropriate registration documents and official guidance. Record discrepancies and ask for explanations. For a UK purchase intended for the Isle of Man, confirm the required export and local registration paperwork before handing over money.

03

Observe, then ask

Look at the overall condition and ask about service history, previous work, damage and known problems. A tidy interior, a quiet start or a current test certificate does not prove that every component is sound. You are recording observations, not certifying a car.

04

Bring in expertise

If a concern affects your decision, arrange an independent inspection with someone competent for that vehicle. Do not crawl beneath an unsupported car or attempt risky checks. Keep a written list of what remains uncertain before deciding whether to proceed.
